How can you tell how fast a storm is moving on radar? ›

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

White lines show changes in air pressure. Numbers on these lines are called millibars, a measure of force. The numbers usually range from about 1000 to 1020 millibars. If you see something lower than 1000 it will be an intense area of low pressure, like with a hurricane.

When navigating using VOR's, they used the 1-In-60 rule (i.e. if an aircraft is 60nm from a VOR and 1° off-track, the aircraft is 1nm off-track). But there is a more generic form of the rule that is useful for radar. Just take the radar range and add two zeros to find out what one degree equals.

Limitations of a weather radar

Range: The optical range of weather radars is limited to 3 -124 miles. This is due to the curvature of the earth. The radar beam travels in a straight line, meaning beyond its max range, it's unable to detect objects close to the surface of the ground.

A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-day—or longer—forecast is only right about half the time.

Based on our observations, rain can cause false readings or interfere with the radar's ability to determine a vehicle's speed. Despite these challenges, radar devices are still used in rainy conditions, although officers may rely more on visual cues and other forms of speed measurement.

What does purple on a radar mean? ›

Hail, which is common in thunderstorms, is extremely reflective, and can easily return high-end reflexivities, so purple on a radar map often means hail is occurring. Ice pellets have higher reflectiveness than rain, but lower than hail. Snow, on the other hand, reflects much less than rain.

The colors are typically a spectrum. The greens indicate light or moderate rainfall. Yellow, orange, and red indicate moderate to heavy rainfall and can also indicate hail. Whites or blues mean snowfall and pink indicates freezing rain, sleet, or a wintry mix.

While black on a radar display may represent an area with little or no precipitation, there are several scenarios where serious hazards may be cloaked in black.
